Having learned of our capacity to provide a ‘one-stop shop’ for project management, quantity surveying and architectural services Millfield School approached CMS Group to provide a full service for the refurbishment of six laboratories located in their biology department.

Located within a 1970/80s building, the project required upgrading certain elements to comply with fire and acoustic regulations. Furthermore, some of the internal walls had been relocated during historic works resulting in unacceptable access to one of the labs through another.

In addition to giving the laboratories a visual ‘facelift’, each classroom required re-planning to accommodate modern teaching methods including dedicated theoretical and practical learning spaces and access to interactive whiteboards. As the project scope increased, a new ‘animal room’ was added to the project to house the department’s small mammal cages and fish tank.

As with most of our projects in the education sector, timeframes were tight and it was essential that all building work was completed during the summer holidays while staff and pupils were away. Working efficiently with the rest of the project team CMS had 6 months from initial contact with the school to occupation of the finished rooms.

Overall, with the provision of upgraded wall construction, a newly formed corridor, modern classrooms and a more accessible animal room CMS Group were pleased to assist Millfield School with their ongoing commitment to supplying high-quality learning environments for their pupils.
